Wow, it’s been a long time yet again. So much to say but not enough time or inspiration lately. Let’s see if we can get some posts up the next few days to make up for it.

This last February, one of my good friends, Andy Marin, came to speak at a gathering of pastors hosted at the local Vineyard Church. Don Follis, the mastermind for the event, had contacted me last fall to get my take on the possibility of bringing Andy in. I gave my counsel and we met several times leading up to the event. I’ve know Andy for about 4 years now so I was excited about his arrival. He’s been an excellent resource in our attempts at bridge building plus a good friend.
My heart went out to him the 2 days he was here because he spoke 6 times and had a couple engagements. This was the first time I had ever heard him actually present his material. His book, Love is an Orientation, hit the evangelical world like a whirlwind and has caused quite a stir. But hearing him live gave me a chance to hear his true passion and heart for LGBT people. It was exciting, encouraging, and equipping. It was a reminder that on a grander scale, we are progressing and the message is being spoken.
While I was overjoyed that the day had finally arrived, I couldn’t help but get frustrated at the poor attendance after Don’s efforts to bring the spiritual elders of Champaign-Urbana together. A luncheon for pastors, a workshop specifically for college/youth ministers, and a full day of helpful material on how to lovingly connect with those who have been marginalized for too long.
I hear questions all the times from colleagues. Even those who try to be progressive amongst the traditionally right wing, conservative ranks of the evangelical church…where were they?
Hey Body of Christ in the prairie…you missed an opportunity to learn something, to grow, to be challenged, to think, to rethink…please don’t do it again.
